A Secret In-house Project
Gossiped as Project Kalamata, people familiar with this plan says Apple has been working on its chips for years, secretly. This in-house project is aimed at making its chips for all of its products. It’s already been embedding Bionic processors, which are self-made chips in its iPhones and iPads for years. And it’s time for MacBooks to have that transition. And if you’re wondering why? It’s Intel to be blamed. There’s no doubt that Intel processors are making good in both desktop and laptop hardware. But it’s not enough. AMD is gaining momentum and crushing Intel in most of the metrics recently and is also pricing aggressively. Yet, Apple’s been using Intel chips since 2005, for delivering top-notch performance. But, it’s blamed to be not up to the mark!
Switching to ARM Architecture
Its rivals like Lenovo, Samsung, and Microsoft are using ARM-based architectures, which are smaller than Intel’s architectures and deliver even better performances. It’s touted that ARM-based chips can do better in graphics and AI-related apps. Thus, these reasons push Apple to ditch Intel soon. Moreover, onboarding the decade experienced Mike Filipp from ARM to Apple is yet another hint. Apple also suggested that it won’t be switching to its processors at once, but rather in phases. It may deploy it’s ow processors into MacBooks as early as next yet, but would still use Intel chips for high-end MacBooks for a while. It’s reported that Apple’s in-house engineers have tried the chip already, and garnered desired results. Thus, it’s just an official announcement from Apple is all we need to confirm. And it may happen in the upcoming WWDC scheduled on June 22.
